Cole Cash – aka, The Grifter (commission)
So, today I decided to post an older drawing – actually a commission done back in (…. man!) 2005 when I was still working on A SCANNER DARKLY here in Austin. I had a visitor contact me from the website and request a Grifter/Cole Cash commission. This was my first unsolicited commission, so I was thrilled. To boot, Grifter is hands-down my favorite comic character of all time. (I may eventually have to eat my hat for saying that…) I even got a Jim Lee sketch at a convention to prove it. Guess I’ll have to post that at some point.
Anyways, looking back at this drawing makes me wonder at times if I’m getting better, worse, of if perhaps I’m glimpsing something of what I’ll be consistently capable of at some point. I was REALLY happy with this when I produced it, and even looking at it from nearly 3 years’ distance, I’m really pleased with how it turned out. There are a couple perspective/anatomical issues – hand size, tilt and foreshortening of the head, etc – but his equipment belt and hair are probably among the best I’ve done to date.
Additionally, this was done around a time when I just started inking myself – having purchased a box of Rapidographs. I’ve since turned to brushes – and I make no claim to have mastered them – but there’s a special place in my heart for the consistency you can get from a brand new – or perhaps well-maintained – tech pen.
Anyways, just thought I’d share a little something I’m fond of. Hope y’all enjoy.
Cheers,
-d.

Hi, David. I saw your Grifter’s sketch and I thought it amazing. Very good draw.
I’m working on my own portfolio, and soon it’ll be possible to see more cover arts, pinups and draws made by my own.
Sucess, bro.

This is by far the best drawing of Cole Cash in existence. Well done my man!
